Profile Of Professional And Academic Activites

I was a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecological Surgeon with special interests in complicated surgical procedures, pioneer of minimal access surgery and provide an expert witness opinion within my field of expertise.

Educated at Oxford, and St. Bartholomew’s medical college, London. Contested the 1972 London University Student President election. Awarded the University Union of Colleges gold medal in that year.

Graduated in medicine from Barts in 1973 After various appointments at Barts, Paris and Oxford, I became Chief Assistant to the current Queen’s gynaecologist at Barts in 1981 to 1983. Since 1984, appointed Consultant to the Oxford Region, based at the Milton Keynes General Hospital (NHS Trust). I provide clinical and research work, including gynaecological cancer, prevention and treatment. Founded and chaired the Myrtle Peach Trust for Cancer Prevention since 1987. The trust funds from fund-raising activities, support the hospital in the efficient treatment of patients, reducing mortality and morbidity and promoting outpatient treatment by laser and minimal access surgery (keyhole procedures). Thousands of patients have been spared hospital admission on the minimal access surgery programme since 1989 which has significantly reduced NHS bed occupancy by facilitating early discharge from hospital.

Recognised trainer for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in safe keyhole surgery. Examiner in obstetrics and gynaecology of the University of London and professional bodies. Former Treasurer of the British Blair Bell Research Society and Founder Chairman of the Milton Keynes Hospital and District Ethical Committee, and laser operational group. I am currently Clinical Director of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Milton Keynes NHS Trust. Appointed in June 2000.

I have pioneered and published work in Medico-Legal dispute resolution between doctor and patient, a registered mediator and a former Member of the Council of the Academy of Experts.

Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologist of the United Kingdom, Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine of London, Former Livery Committee Member of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London. Member of the Oxford Region Cancer Intelligence Group. I am a Senior Examiner for the membership of the R.C.O.G.

Author of various medical, scientific, clinical, endoscopic medico-legal and educational papers. Recently a Royal College Tutor for Post-graduate Education in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the Oxford Region.

In 1993 I was an invitation lecturer at the European Endoscopic Training Centre, Paris, France. In 1995, delivered the BMA lecture on medical litigation and expert witness to the Oxford Region. In 1996, awarded the Wedgwood lecturer’s prize in gynaecology from the Trent Region. In 1997 elected Fellow of the Association of Lawyers and Legal Advisors, and a member of the Athenaeum of London.

A keen sportsman in rugby, golf and cricket, and a former President of the Milton Keynes and Districts Cricket League. Currently Vice President of the Barts Rugby and Cricket Clubs.

At the July 1997 ceremony of the Open University, I was awarded the Honorary Doctorate Degree of the University (Honoris Causa).

I have invented a number of surgical procedures. to minimise trauma in patients’ care. In March 1997, published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, is my most recent invention of a life saving operation fort women who haemorrhage after childbirth. This novel surgical technique has enabled world-wide awareness of a new method of saving life in maternity care.
